Hybrid Editing
with the DPE / VPE and Profile

Editware offers major enhancements to editing with disk-based video servers

True hybrid editing is now available for the Editware DPE and VPE editing controllers with Grass Valley (and Tektronix) Profile video servers. (Check with Editware for the latest on support of other servers.)

Overview
DPE and VPE Editing System users who have a Grass Valley Profile PDR or XP can have the best of two worlds - the ability to edit with high-end online equipment and operate at non-linear speed. Get the most from your linear equipment, including video switchers, digital effects, audio mixing consoles and digital VTRs. Just add a Profile video server - and, if you are not yet using one, a DPE or VPE Editing system from Editware.

Super Edit NLE
In the NLE mode, Editware communicates with the Profile in native protocol, enabling use of its non-linear capabilities. NLE supports use of any number of Profile channels, from one to eight, enabling applications from "Cuts Only" such as news or promo editing all the way to full multi-source transitions, effects and pre-read. Four Editors may share a single Profile, with simultaneous, instant access to the same media.

The NLE mode retains the traditional Super Edit look and feel, minimizing the NLE learning curve for those who are familiar with linear editing. The Profile Timeline is accessed from the editor as a virtual "R-VTR". When selecting the R-VTR, the editor controls the Timeline like a source - in effect, playing back the EDL in real time.

NLE allows the use of source clips that are currently being recorded through other applications, including the Profile VdrPanel. This gives you access to source material a few frames after it has been recorded.

Entire sequences may be built and played back without re-recording to tape. Events are inserted on the Timeline with or without rippling (adjusting) the Timeline.

An edited Timeline can be saved back to the Profile at any time for future use, or to immediately re-use as a pre-assembled clip.

Pre-read Power
A very important feature of Editware's NLE is Pre-read editing. A transition to or from the R?VTR Timeline is as easy as selecting the R-VTR in the Dissolve, Wipe, Key, or Cut dialog. NLE pre-read is non-destructive - allowing unlimited experimentation, without losing previously recorded layers. Another feature is the ability to run the R-VTR at Programmed Motion speeds while in Pre-read. That's impossible with VTR pre-read!

Seamless Editing from Tape or Disk
If the source you choose to use has NOT yet been digitized, you can edit directly from tape, and the material will be digitized to the Profile in REAL TIME, and automatically inserted onto the Timeline! The same applies to the output of any mixer, switcher, off-speed sources or DVE transitions.

Logging and Digitizing Flexibility
NLE's Logger Mode provides a simple, fast way to select and automatically digitize media from tape. Using multiple VTRs, you can scan material, and quickly create a dummy EDL. Then press the auto-assemble key and the optimized digitizing process begins. Up to 6 source VTRs can be loaded and auto-assembled at one time. You can choose to retain original timecode from each source, or define new timecode.

Off-line Edit Decision Lists (EDLs) from other systems such as Sony, CMX and Avid can be conveniently imported and auto assembled. Import the offline EDL through Editware's 409NT EDL processing program, and press AUTO ASSEMBLE. The first step automatically transfers the original material onto the Profile, and the second step quickly conforms the digitized media to the offline EDL. Clip notes are added automatically. Cuts will be done as non-linear edits, and any imported event that requires external processing of media is automatically digitized in real-time.

Live Applications
For sports highlights assembly and playback and other live applications, NLE includes the HOT CLIP Logger mode. This mode allows you to place Profile in record, and while the Profile records incoming material (live or off tape) you can mark IN and OUT points for that material and create HOT Clips for immediate playback…with or without head & tail handles. This can all be accomplished by one operator using a DPE or VPE editor. For even more speed and flexibility in this mode, you can use two editors simultaneously with the same Profile … one to record and log your clips, and the other for preparation and play back.

Internal M/E
The PDR Profile also has an option called the VME, a Video Mix Effects option. The VME is a very cost effective, fully capable digital production switcher. It can be installed in a Profile PDR 200 and 300, or a Profile PDR 100 with the appropriate upgrades. A similar option is planned for the XP Profile later during the year 2000.

NL Source Mode
In this mode, editing is performed directly to tape, or to a Profile channel in VTR emulation. The DPE or VPE editor is used in the traditional linear manner, with the added ability to load and unload Profile clips and to change and create Profile directories directly from the editor. This mode is included with the NLE option and is also available as a separate option. When used with NLE, the SWAP feature is supported for quickly changing between recording on Profile as a virtual "R-VTR" and recording to tape.
